So you live in a small house (that is of no historic significance) with a vaulted ceiling with wood panelling that is stained brown.  Once upon a time the look  was all cozy and cuddly but it is time to paint and update. 

I find that brown ceilings tend to close in a space and make the room seem smaller.  I think when you update a room it is important to be courageous and use a trusted source to help you make decisions.  The only way I would handle the brown ceiling is to paint it the same lighter color that the walls are going to be painted.  It is possible to paint it in a semi-gloss or if you choose the same finish as the walls.  The minute the paint job is done, your room will feel brighter and bigger!
